Organize with a Longaberger Sewing Basket

Another good thing:  a Longaberger sewing basket

As you're organizing, you might come across handy items that could be combined in a Longaberger basket for sewing.  Whether you're reattaching a button or helping your child with a simple craft project, there are times you need some good scissors, pins, needles, and thread together.

Longaberger's baskets named for sewing tended to be round and larger than I like.  Of course, any basket can become a sewing basket, depending on your needs.  Mine is the red 1992 Christmas Collections Season's Greetings Basket, a rectangular basket probably intended to gather Christmas cards.  At 9 1/2" l by 6" w by 6" h, it is a great size and shape to gather the supplies I like to use without being too big or bulky.

Longaberger's longtime favorite Spring Basket would make a handy sewing basket.  It's a little wider than the one I use with a stationary handle that's easy to grab (11" l by 8" w by 5 1/2" h).  My basket holds the things I use most.  One is a little box of straight pins that is rubber-banded shut.  I don't like using pincushions.  I also have different sizes and types of scissors, a seam gauge and measuring tape, different thread colors and bobbins with thread on them, a big wide see-thru ruler, and more.

Do you like to sew?  I enjoy it, but I don't have a good reason to do it any more.  I learned to sew in 4-H and by trying to do everything my three older sisters did as I grew up.  I worked at two different fabric stores when I was in high school and college and also created sample garments for them.  I combined parts of different patterns to make my best friend's ideal wedding dress.  I am able to sew; I just don't have anything I want to sew.

I did make a few fun masks during the first weeks of the pandemic, but there are many available now that are better-made than mine.  Until I get inspired again, my sewing basket will sit on a shelf in the closet, handy to grab and go.

The 1992 Season's Greetings Basket was made on the same form as the Small Purse and Mother's Day Purse Baskets, in case you'd like a lid on your sewing basket.  The same form was used for consultant award baskets through the years as well, such as the '99 Branch Excellence Basket.
