Take a Walk!

Are you feeling cooped-up in your house today?  Or are your kids making you want to escape your house, even for a few moments? I would recommend just taking a walk.  I've been gifted with bearable weather in southwest Missouri, so I've been getting to walk outside for the last few days.

My sweet sister fixed me up many years ago with a Walkman (remember those?!?) and a power walking music tape, and I'm still enjoying walking, although the Walkman and its cassette tape are no more.  You'll start walking to that beat, get your heart rate up, and free your mind to ponder all sorts of things.  You can feel better and have the world's problems solved, all in 30 minutes.

I'm sure that going to the gym would offer a much better workout, but I don't want anyone to see my lumpy bumpy self, and I'm happy just walking right now.  I have some small weights I carry sometimes too.

If your Walkman has also bit the dust, you'll need to borrow an i-pod or similar device from your child or grandchild.  Head to iTunes to get some good walking music.  I enjoyed the 70's Workout Mix by Power Music Workout today, but there are several good combinations on there to buy and download.  The songs are extended to 5 minutes, so in 30 minutes you will have walked to 6 songs, a little over 2 miles.  You may find yourself dancing along to "Listen to the Music" or "Sweet Home Alabama."  Remember the Prancercise lady?  I'm sure she's in great health!  If you find the beat too fast, just walk and enjoy the music.  You'll find yourself picking up speed over time.  And yes, I do wear those clunky old headphones, by choice.  They are a great way to keep your bangs out of your face.

I hope you have a good, safe place to walk.  I had teacher friends who walked in the school halls after work each day for exercise, and our church has many who walk in the Family Life Center, no matter the weather.  I have put on my tennis shoes and "marched" to the music while vacuuming or moving things inside the house, too.  Wherever you can push up your heart rate for at least 20 minutes, hopefully 30, it will be beneficial.  You'll find that it lifts your spirits, too, not to mention the health benefits.  Happy walking!
