Enjoy Apple Dumplings This Fall!

Apple dumplings should be a fall tradition, whether you celebrate Johnny Appleseed or not.  Any recipe that incorporates crescent rolls is automatically a winner, and this recipe's interesting combination of ingredients pays off in great taste! This recipe could easily be halved and baked in Grandma Bonnie's Pie Plate, and you want to try vanilla ice cream with the warm dumplings.

As you know, I'm not a food photographer, and I failed to get a picture of the finished product before people started digging in.  Sorry about that!

You'll need:

  • 2 Granny Smith apples
  • 2 cans crescent rolls (8 per package)
  • 1 1/2 sticks butter
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 heaping T cinnamon
  • 1 12 ounce bottle Sprite
  • 1 Longaberger Woven Traditions Large Low Bowl

Peel, core, and slice apples into 8 wedges each (16 wedges total) .  Wrap one crescent roll around each apple wedge and place in the bottom of Large Low Bowl.
Melt butter in microwave; add sugar and stir until mixed well (will be thick).  Add cinnamon to mixture and stir well.  Coat each "dumpling" with a serving spoonful of this mixture.  Add in any left over.

Pour Sprite over entire batch of dumplings.  Bake at 350 degrees F for approximately 40-45 minutes, until a nice deep brown.
Remove from the oven and let stand at least 15 minutes--if you can wait that long!  These are also great cold.
I'm sorry you just get the leftovers picture instead of the whole beautiful bowl full. Maybe next time I make them, I'll manage to hold everyone off and get that final photo.

Remember, you could easily halve this recipe, using one apple, one can of crescent rolls, half the other ingredients, and bake in a regular pie plate.  You'll seriously enjoy them!

Longaberger's Woven Traditions Large Low Bowl is a pottery bowl available in 2012-2013 that is shallow but 13" across.  It was a great bowl, available in the Wish List, and is so fun for recipes like this!  You might be able to find one on the secondary market--or just use another big dish you have.
