Candy Crackers Make Tasty Gift Basket Filler

Longaberger Baskets make wonderful gifts at Christmas and any time through the year, and filling them with something quirky, personalized, consumable, and inexpensive just adds to the special gift.  From the beautiful little Tree Trimming Baskets with their intricate details to the many Booking and Horizon of Hope Baskets, miniature baskets are even more fun when full--a part to savor immediately and a part to keep.

Candy Crackers are a fun treat that is unexpectedly good!  You will find that you usually have these ingredients in your kitchen and can whip Candy Crackers up quickly for a gathering or family evening.    Divide them into clear or holiday print cello bags and tie with ribbon, and you have a perfect filler for a Tree Trimming Basket gift.

Candy Crackers

40 saltine crackers, 2" x 2" (one sleeve)
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup butter
1 12-ounce package milk chocolate morsels

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Place saltines side-by-side on a foil-covered cookie sheet.  Bring sugar and butter to a boil in a saucepan.  Boil 3 minutes.  Spread mixture over crackers.  Bake 5 minutes.  Sprinkle chocolate morsels over baked crackers.  Let stand 5 minutes.  Refrigerate until hard.  Break into pieces.  Serves 24, 2 pieces each.

I don't use nearly 12 ounces of chocolate chips--I like the pieces that just have the caramel too.  Sometimes the chocolate chips don't stick, so you might be sure they're lightly pressed down and attached.  These are also tasty before completely hardened.   There is a recipe similar to this that uses graham crackers and chopped nuts.

One batch is a good size to put in your Woven Traditions Star Dish or any medium-sized basket.  I have lots of little Tree Trimming Baskets listed in my eBay store, as well as a Star Dish, and they would be a sweet gift filled with these.  I hope you'll enjoy Candy Crackers this year and make them a family tradition.
